Is All Might an American? Why Does He Look Like One?

My Hero Academia has churned out heroes after heroes, each with their own specific quirks and personalities. However, the number one position (in our hearts at least) will always belong to the symbol of peace – All Might.

Since the very beginning, this hero has impressed the fans with his charisma and strength.

Helping people, saving the world, and teaching students how to be better heroes, makes All Might the perfect hero, i.e., if such a thing exists. With tens of thousands of people relying on him, he has made sure not to betray their faith.

While he is extremely well-liked and is a recurring character in the series, there was little to no information known about his origin.

Due to his over the top Americanisation, it was believed that he belonged to that nationality.

However, with the release of Vol 0 – All Might: Rising, we finally have some concrete information that may disprove this.

1. Is All Might an American?

All Might is not an American but someone who fell in love with the country after visiting it at the age of 19. While he looks like a typical American, he is Japanese, and his real name is Toshinori Yagi.

In Vol 0 – All Might: Rising, it was revealed that Gran Torino convinced All Might to go to America and train.

By doing so, he would be safe from the threat of All for one and would be able to develop his skills and strength in peace.

Due to this, it can be assumed that he was there for at least five years, as both a student and a debut hero. This part of his past may contribute greatly to his Americanisation.

I. Why Does All Might Look American? Is He White?

All Might is not White but Asian, due to his Japanese nationality.

He looks American because the creator of the series has taken inspiration from the superheroes found in the west, especially Superman.

As many fans have noticed, both the characters share similar traits, such as having bulky muscles, tall physiques, and bright eyes.

Furthermore, even the red, white, and blue colors of his clothes match the American flag and add to his persona.

2. Why Does All Might Use the Names of American States?

Based on classic American heroes, All Might shares his physical traits with them.

As if this was not enough, he has been shown to have studied there for a few years and even harbors deep admiration and love for the country and its culture.

All Might uses the names of American states before unleashing a smash as it is a way for him to display his love for the country and pay homage to it.

Furthermore, he trained there for five years, and during that time, he might have developed this system to measure and control his strength.

For example, he uses the names of bigger states such as Texas before unleashing a powerful punch, and when he defeats All For One, he says United States of smash.

This indicates that each state represents a different amount of power corresponding with its size.

3. When Did All Might Go to America? How Old Is He Now?

Just before All Might finished his final year in UA’s hero course, his mentor Nana Shimura was killed at the hands of All for One.

After completing his hero course, i.e., when he was 19, Gran Torino urged All Might to go abroad to acquire the experience and control needed to unleash his great power. He returned to Japan after five years.

All Might and Endeavor attended UA at the same time; however, when All Might was in his 3rd year, Endeavor was still in his 1st year.

During the provisional license exam, the latter’s age was revealed to be around 46, which makes All Might 49 years old.

4. My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia is a Japanese superhero manga series written and illustrated by Kōhei Horikoshi. It has been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump since July 2014, with its chapters additionally collected in 24 tankōbon volumes as of August 2019.

It follows a quirkless boy Izuku Midoriya and how he backed the greatest HeroHero alive. Midoriya, a boy who has been admiring heroes and their ventures since the day he was born, came into this world without a quirk.

On one fateful day, he meets All Might, the greatest HeroHero of all time, and discovers that he was quirkless as well.

With his diligent attitude and unwavering spirit about being a hero, Midoriya manages to impress All Might. He is chosen to be the heir to the power of One for All.
